The chairman of Emohua local government area, Dr Chidi Lloyd was among the participants at the opening ceremony and day one of the 2023 PortHarcourt International Conference held at Dr Obi Wali International Conference Center PortHarcourt on Thursday.
The 2-day conference themed ‘Deepening Democratic Culture and Institutions for Sustainable Development and Security in Nigeria’ which had former Nigeria’s president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as keynote speaker was chaired by the immediate former Governor of Ekiti State, H.E Kayode Fayemi, while erstwhile Rivers State Governor, Dr Peter Odili performed the unveiling of the book titled ‘ Bridging Rivers’; a comprehensive analysis of the ‘ Infrastructural Transformation and Progress’ witnessed in Rivers State under the administration of Gov Nyesom Wike presented by Dr Lars Ritcher; Managing Director, Julius Berger Nig. PLC.
The second segment of the conference which featured a roundtable discussion with the theme ‘ The Judiciary and Deepening of Democratic Practice in Nigeria’ had Hon Justice Mary Odili; retired justice of the supreme court as chairman, with renowned Senior Advocates of Nigeria; Femi Falana, Emmanuel Ukala, O.C.J Okocha, Kanu Godwin Agabi, Mohammed Bello Adoke and Olisa Agbakoba as presenters.
The conference sponsored by the Rivers State Government also had Gov Nyesom Wike as the special guest of honour, who in his opening remarks urged Nigerians to take advantage of the 2023 general election to strengthen the nation’s democracy.
The governor charged Nigerians not to allow the 2023 general election to fail, stressing that failure to get it right in the next general election will further set the country backwards socially and economically.
